Mirari Pop Pop Piano
(Patch Products $27.99 Score:)

We ran into this at the Museum of Modern Art and had to wait a long while for a turn. Kids of all ages were drawn to this tot-sized keyboard with a see-through dome where music making also sets the colorful plastic stars in action. Pop, pop is right. Hit the keys and the stars pop up and jump from one cylinder to another. There are two sound modes, one musical the other funny sound effects; both pleasant enough. Older players may try to play tunes or get the colors into the matching cylinder; for babies this is more of an instant gratification toy that empowers their sense of being able to make things happen. Marked for 1 and up, we'd say this will be enjoyed even by sitting up babies who are gaining control of their hand movements.

SNAP: The sounds and sights of this little keyboard will lend motivation for using eye hand skills that are rewarding with payoffs they can see and hear. Kids can activate this with a swipe of a hand or with more regned finger movements. You may need to velcro this down to a table top so it does not move around.

Kid O Wobbles
(Kid O $8.99 Score:)

These colorful Wobbles are weighted at the bottom so they move easily, but not too far, with a swipe of the hand and then bounce back up. For sitting up babies they are a hands-on exercise in cause and effect. Choose fox, owl, or raccoon or all three. Wobbles are just the right size for small hands to hold and for toddlers, who like to take small playthings along. Done in bright slick plastic they are totally easy to grasp, attractive and also fun for playing the "stupid parent game" in which baby drops it from high chair and parent picks it up...again and again.  Cause and effect for grown ups learning about who is in charge. They say 1 & up; we'd say 6 month and up, up, up.

Corolle's line of Babipouce dolls fill the bill as a great place to start in doll land. With an 11-inch pillow-soft fabric, huggable body and soft vinyl face (with painted featured), this is a safe choice for older babies and toddlers. Delicately scented with vanilla, the sewn on clothes stay where they belong and the doll is machine washable. Fisher-Price Bright Beats Smart Touch Play Space
(Fisher-Price $60 Score:)

Designed for infants and toddlers, this touch-sensitive light bar responds with music, lights, and songs. Talk about making things happen, the play space also includes a ball run, a spinner, and roller ball that provide lots of lessons in cause and effect. As baby grows from sitting to standing to toddling, the play space also has age appropriate games that invite exploration. We could have done without the alphabet and counting games for toddlers who are barely talking. That said, we know babies are going to like the making-things-happen aspect of this toy.  This was tested with a range of ages and as we expected, it did well with older toddlers. One of our families felt that the toy did not always respond to the touch which made it less than smart - but they still enjoyed the toy. Another tester with a 22-month old tester tried using it for a climbing toy. She was beyond the game play of the toy as it was designed.  Marked for 6-36 months; we think the truth is between that time; more like 6-18 months.

NogginRings Reaching and Grasping Rings
(smartnoggintoys $18.99 Score:)

Use this for early interactions, holding it for baby to swat at, reach for and grasp hold of as you play together. This high contrast toy will grab even a newborns visual attention with it's face in the center, and black and white rings and big red ring. It has a soft rattle that will not startle baby. Turn the face and there's a peek-a-boo game you can play as the face disappears and reappears. Once baby begins to reach out and take hold of things, this is a favorite to bat at, grab and explore. Encourages two handed play and exploration with older infants. Newborns to 12 months.

Manhattan Toy Puppy Go Round
(Manhattan Toy $10.90 Score:)

With a big red suction cup to hold it down, this highchair toy has plenty of action. It spins, squeaks and the little pups spin independently. The colorful Puppy Go Round calls for fine motor skills by little fingers rather than a simple swipe of the hand. A satisfying toy for empowering a sense of being able to make things happen and learning about cause and effect. 6 months & up.
