What child does not know the film of the Wizard of Oz? But how about the source of that classic film? L. Frank Baum wrote an entire series of books about the Land of Oz and listening to this may just open the door to those books. Read by Brooke Shields, this is a good one to listen to together in the car on the way to and from regular trips or before dinner while routine things like setting the table or cleaning up has to be done. 2012 Award
Vivaldi's Four Seasons Book and CD
(by Anna Harwell Celenza/ illus. JoAnn E. Kitchel, Charlesbridge $19.99 Score:)

Newest in the author's series of great composer's stories. Ratherthan telling the whole life story, each of the picture books concentrates on a famous composition by a composer. This tells about the Venetian orphanage where Vivaldi taught music to young girls. His fanciful stories did not please the governors and he was sent away. But he returned later with his most memorable composition, the Four Seasons. The author's notes indicate that it is not known for certain when his masterpiece was composed, though it is believed to have been in Mantua, she he worked after leaving the orphanage. Weaving stories to the great music will hopefully open the doors to new listening for another generation.  7 & up.

2011 Award
Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite, Book and CD
(by Anna Harwell Calenza/ illus. Don Tate, Charlesbridge $19.95 Score:)

Musicologist, Anna Harwell Calenza tells young readers how it was that Duke Ellington and his collaborator, Billy Strayhorn, came to transform Tchaikovsky's classic Nutcracker Suite into a collection of jumpin' jazz melodies. Based on historic fact, this is a terrific way to introduce young audiences to jazz, using familiar music that they recognize as they hear the new variations. The story reflects how reluctant some of the band members were to playing ballet music and how the work of two masters opened their ears and minds. Vivid colors dance through the pages of the handsome book that comes with an orchestral CD of the composition played by Duke Ellington himself and members of his orchestra.

2011 Award
A Crazy Day with Cobras, Magic Tree House
(Listening Library $15 Score:)

In this most recent recording of a Magic Tree House adventure, Jack and Annie are off to ancient India where they must find a magical emerald in order to rescue Penny, a penguin that has been put under a spell and turned to stone. Read by the author, Mary Pope Osborne, this is one of a series that 9-12 year olds love. Bringing home a 2 CD set may be a great way to whet their appetite to both hear and read more of the dozens of Magic Tee House stories. We like that it combines some fantasy with history and adventure that is right on the mark for this age group. They like having some familiar characters that ease them into each new story. Also new this season, Dogs in the Dead of Winter, a Swiss adventure.

2011 Award
Little Women
(by Louisa May Alcott, narrated by Kate Reading, Listening Library $25 Score:)

This unabridged version of the beloved Little Women has 15 discs and runs for 18 hours. That said, Kate Reading makes every character come alive with distinctive voice, so this is an engaging classic. Choose this for an after dinner treat of listening pleasure or for drives to and from wherever. IT's a great way to make a memorable trip or summer nights all the more memorable with a shared story you can look forward to for a week or more. While you are at it, rent the film and compare the written version to the film. Or even better--go to Netflix and do a Little Women marathon to compare the 1994 film with the earlier 1949 and 1933 versions. Doing a bit of multi-media Comparative Lit.

Reluctant readers can often be turned into fans when the subject of a book is sports. Matt Christopher is the master of more than 100 sports books and this audio book, just might spark your child's interest in hunting down a few more books by Christopher. This story is told with a full cast of actors who bring the story to life. You might also bring home a paperback copy of the book ($4.95)so that your child can follow alongthe reading.  Or how about another Matt Christopher book to dive into when the listening is done. In this story George goes from being a terrible hitter to being a slugger who hits one homer after another. 2 disks, 1 hr. 40 minutes.
