2010 Award
Claude Monet, The Painter Who Stopped the Trains
(by P.I. Maltbie/ illus. by Jos. A. Smith, Abrams Books $18.99 Score:)

Claude Monet lived in the country, but when the trains rumbled by, his 9-year old son, Jean would get all excited. While the critics did not seem to understand his "impressionist" paintings and his interest in changing light in the natural world, he decided that perhaps they would understand if he painted city scenes and something as modern as a train. This was at a time when painting was generally done in the studio, not out of doors. This well told story is based on true events and adds another layer of pleasure and understanding to the famous Gare Saint-Lazare paintings.
