2002 Award
(by J. Patrick/ illus. Frank Remkiewicz, Harcourt $16 Score:) Kids who are nuts about math will relish the word problems in this playful, but challenging book. For the non-math student this may put a funny spin on word problems, but go easy. Some students will see this as no better than a dreaded workbook.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2002.

2003 Award
America, a Patriotic Primer
(by Lynne V. Cheney/illus. by Robin P. Glasser, Simon & Schuster $16.99 Score:) An ABC that celebrates some very important names such as J for Jefferson and K for King, as in Martin Luther King Jr., and some very big concepts such as E for equality and F for freedom. Many of the ideas here will go over the heads of the intended audience, but Glasser's detailed illustrations lend themselves to lots of talking along with the big ideas Cheney introduces.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2003.
