2010 Award
Born to be Giants
(by Lita Judge, Roaring Brook Press $17.99 Score:)

Unlike so many dinosaur books that catalog the many kinds of dinosaurs, Lita Judge gives young readers a look at the many ways baby dinosaurs hatched and became the giants. Budding paleontologists and the just curious reader will be fascinated with the way Judge shows how scientists have used what they know about living creatures to understand how dinosaur babies made it from the nest to their prehistoric forests and swamps. Did you ever consider how dinosaurs warmed their nests without sitting on them? Can you imagine a T-Rex mama protecting her young? With a touch of good-natured humor, amazing research, and lively illustrations, Judge brings little known information to life in a fascinating book for 6-9ís.

2006 Award
Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs
(by Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart, Candlewick $25 Score:) There are several pop-ups on almost every page of this amazing book. 2006 Award
Prehistoric Actual Size
(by Steve Jenkins, Houghton Mifflin $16 Score:) It isnít about the facts, though this is a picture book crammed full of facts and tidbits of information. In this case, itís far more about the wonder of these amazing specimens, shown in their actual size. Though they canít fit in their entirety, Jenkins show you enough of a detail to deliver the big ideas. Imagine a dragonfly with wings more than two feet across, or a terror bird large enough to eat a horse! Of course, we do not know how large or small horses were in those days. Also top rated, I See a Kookaburra! Introducing animals from differing habitats. 6 & up.

Boy, Were We Wrong About Dinosaurs!
(by Kathleen V. Kudlinski/illus. by S.D. Schindler, Dutton $15.99 Score:) A refreshing look at dinosaurs, contrasting what we used to think we knew, with what we think we know now. As interesting as the information is in this book, itís the bigger idea that wins the day by helping young people see that our body of knowledge is not fixed and closed, but rather is ever-growing and often changing. 7 & up.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.
