2013 Award
Cinderelephant
(Emma Dodd, Scholastic $16.99 Score:)

Recast with a seriously strange cast, this retelling of Cinderella is visually fun and full of not too subtle word play. Cinderelephant's ugly cousins are two warthogs, known as the Warty Sisters and her fairy godmother is a small mouse who provides a stretch limo and requisite ballroom fashions. It's apparent from the start that Prince Trunky, son of King Saggy and Queen Wrinkly, will find his mate when Cinderelephant appears. There are few surprises here. That said, it is amusing to share and compare with the original. Do a bit of comparative lit and maybe spin another Cindy Tale with a different cast and even a different adventure. 4 & up.

Henny Penny
(retold and illustrated by Paul Galdone, Houghton Mifflin $8.99 Score:)

A reissued treasure, this classic story retold and illustrated by one of the great picture book artists of the 20th century. Now in a new collection of Folk Tale Classics from Houghton Mifflin. Good fun to read aloud with all the rhyming names repeated again and again as Henny Penny and Cocky Locky and Ducky Lucky run off to spread the news that the sky is falling! Sounds a little like the news on TV, too. Spoiler Alert: In case you forgot—Foxy Loxy is the last of the cast. 4 & up.

2013 Award
Give Up, Gecko!
(retold by Margaret Read MacDonald/ illus. Deborah , Amazon $16.99 Score:)

Based on a folktale from Uganda, Give Up, Gecko! is a gem of a read-aloud with lots of repetition. Children will soon be chanting along with the reader, cheering each of the thirsty animals seeking water. Told with wit and perfect pacing, the story and playful illustrations speak to big ideas about sticking to a task and that being small is not a measure of what one can do. In MacDonald's telling, one can almost hear the village storyteller pouring this tale out to young and old alike as they gather by the fire. 4-8

2012 Award
Goldilocks Variations
(by Allan Ahlberg/ illus Jessica Ahlberg, Candlewick $17.95 Score:)

Goldilocks seems to have been in the air this season with several new variations on the classic story. Allan Ahlberg, the creator of the Jolly Postman, has done a collection of amusing versions, one with not three but thirty-three Bears. Among the several stories is a pop-up play, one with a cottage that grows into a tall house and several other stories with pull the tab variations. This is a novelty book with some entertaining surprises for kids who know the original tale and may like making up further adventures of their own for these classic characters.

2012 Award
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs
(by Mo Willems, HarperCollins $17.99 Score:)

Who better than Mo Willems can fracture the Three Bears? The laughter began with the endpapers and did not end until the last page of this delicious picturebook! I never felt more connected to Goldilocks; who knew she was a chocolaholic! So, imagine the vicarious pleasure of Goldilocks with pots full of pudding instead of porridge. Yum! Yes. This is one big funny treat to share! 4-80.

2012 Award
Goldilocks and Just One Bear
(by Leigh Hodgkinson, Candlewick $15.99 Score:)

This further adventure of Goldilocks and Baby Bear takes place in the city where a not so little Baby Bear has wandered by mistake. In a goofy adventure the tables are turned and the two classic characters rediscover each other. Sure to amuse older children who know the original tale well.   They say 3 & up, but we say old 4-5-year olds will see the connections and enjoy comparing the old and the new.

The Little Red Hen; A Folk Tale Classic
(Illus. Paul Galdone, Houghton Mifflin $8.99 Score:)

One of three reissued classic folktales illustrated in ink and vibrant watercolors by Caldecott wining artist, Paul Galdone. This delightfully lively version is our favorite of the three. Because iof the repetative format it will also work well for beginning readers. Also in the series, The Three Little Pigs and The Three Bears. These truly are classics and a bargain, besides. 3 & up.

2010 Award
Goldilocks and the Three Bears, A Tale Moderne
(by Steven Guarnaccia, Abrams Books $18.95 Score:)

These "hip" bears live in split-level home furnished in mid- century style. The story is the same, but the look is totally a la Eames and Noguchi. Kids might like to find all the ways that this telling is different or the same as the original. Chances are they will quickly realize that these bears were going to eat chili rather than porridge. But then, one must suspect that the artist has never had chili, since the bowls are filled with a green liquid. O.K. I am being literal. So maybe it is a green chili. But as one who loved the Arne Jacobsen "Egg" chair, it would never be described as 'way too soft' by anyone. That said, if you like to mix art history with your folktales, this is for you. From the creator of The Three Little Pigs, An Architectural Tale, also for art lovers.
