2014 Award
Global Girl Doll Collection
(Global Girl Dolls $89.99 Score:)

Older girls may have put away their baby dolls, but they often still long for one last doll to treasure and this collection certainly fits the bill. These are 21" dolls each dressed and styled for a specific country. These are nothing like your motherís or grandmother's foreign doll collection with traditional costumes. Tatiana from Russia, Vivienne from France, Mei Ling from China, Marcela from Argentina, Amahle from South Africa, and Tiffany from New York wear stylish and current sophisticated outfits. Each of the was made with a unique face mold and coloring that reflects the world of todayís girls. The soft-bodied dolls are pose able and can sit as well as stand. They come dressed with underwear, pierced earrings, coats and hats or lighter outer wear, and casual sports outfits. Each has shoes, handbags, and a beautiful head of hair to style and re-style. A book ($9.99) is sold separately for each doll and features both fiction and non-fiction to acquaint the reader with life styles for differing cultures. They are so new, they are only sold on line through globalgirl.com.

Ragtales Primrose Pig
(Ragtails $19.95 Score:)

Primrose Pig is just the right size to fit in the hand of toddlers and your preschoolers, who like their huggables either oversized or small enough to carry in one hand. Primrose Pig is the latter. She is a charmer with a knitted shawl and gentle look who will no doubt listen well and play whatever games your tot has in mind. Easy to take along as a comfort toy wherever.

2014 Awards
Big Friend Hops
(Bunnies By the Bay $32 Score:)

A deliciously sweet white 16" bunny with floppy ears and pink nose and a blush of pink on the cheeks. So soft and huggable you will want to snuggle with it, too. This is light-weight but big enough to fill the arms of toddlers, who like their dolls really big or (at the other end of the spectrum) small enough to fit in a fist. Bunnies are usually seasonal toys, but this is one love of a bunny for the year round!

2014 Award
North American Bear Company Cutie Tattootie Shark
(North American Bear Co. $24.99 Score:)

One of a new line of woven cotton dolls, it comes with six vegetable-based tattoos that wash off the doll or child. This less than sinister looking shark is likely to appeal to those who prefer less cutsie soft doll types, despite its name. There is also a Bunny with orange ears, hot pink arms and pale pink face and body. Either of these are more like activity dolls with a limited agenda. Once the tattoos are used, the doll remains ready for imaginative play. It's a look. 5 & up.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2014. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Award
Prettie Girls Lena
(One World Doll Project $22 Score:)

A new collection of fashion dolls has just stepped onto the runway. Inspired by her childhood love of Barbie and a career that started with designing dolls of color for Mattel, Stacey McBride-Irby has just introduced Valencia, a Latina from Mexico City and Lena, a Business Girl from North Carolina. Like women of color, the Prettie Girls dolls come in varying skin tones and hair. Lena, the Business Girl is 11.5 inches tall and big on working out and other sports. She comes dressed for an active life style. They say 3 & up, we'd say this is going to be better for 5's and up who have the dexterity to deal with the fine details.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2013 Award
Lottie Kawaii Karate
(Arklu $19.99 Score:)

Our testers continue to love the active life style of their little Lottie dolls. Just 7-inches tall, with silky hair and painted faces, these are girls - not fashion dolls. They are jointed and able to stand. Just the right size for the hand or to fit for many doll houses. Each comes with a backstory that involves the girls in typical activities. This season Kawaii Karate Lottie is ready for class; her object is to win her yellow belt. Add separate outfits for Gymnastics, soccer or boogie boarding. Or consider a Lottie Robot Girl is entering the science fair and hopes to win with a robot she is building. Our Lottie fans also liked the Pandora's Box Lottie, who works in an animal shelter; Pirate Queen, a mariner Light House Keeper, and Butterfly Protector with her own net. Marked 3 & up, we think the fine motor skills for dressing and redressing these dolls will challenge kids under 5.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
