2015 Award
Lottie Doll Collection
(Arku $19.99-34.99 Score:)

Lottie arrived a little late this season but better late than never! She's one of those special collectables, only 7.5 inches tall, available with different hair color, styles and interests. Best of all the Lottie collection conveys positive messages about the many roles girls can play. While her clothing choices are vast, she is more than another fashion plate. Like girls today, she has interests as varied as karate, soccer, riding and the solar system. Lottie Stargazer ($24.95) is dressed in a warm jacket, boots and hat to go out on a wintery night and view the sky with her own telescope (included along with solar system cards). Girls are encouraged to visit the European Space Agency website, www.esa.int/kids to find space information, quizzes and games. Pony Club Lottie ($34.95) is the biggie of the season; a blonde Lottie dressed in riding clothes and packaged with her own black beauty pony. There are many other accessories for the young rider and this is sure to make a hit with the young horsie set. Also new and less pricey this season, Lottie Fossil Hunter with her backpack and hiking clothes, or Muddy Puddles in her yellow slicker and Rockabilly, a musician who wears a vintage school jacket and glasses. Each are $19.99. Like a number of other doll collections this year, you can find Lottie dolls with the accent on sports, active life and several with a link to STEM learning. For a small collectable, she has a lot of versatility. Marked for 3 and up, we think these will be easier for slightly older girls, who will be able to get the clothes both on and off. Preschoolers generally do not have the fine motor skills to handle the tiny shoes and clothes; they do well with the undressing part and then will need adult help to get the tiny clothes back on or add this to their collection of naked dolls.

Corolle Mon Premier Diaper Backpack
(Corolle $42 Score:)

For girls on the go, this new fabric and color way of the original diaper backpack; perfect for carrying a 12-inch doll and all of baby's accessories. Unzip it and there is a changing pad for diaper changes. This is marked for 18 months and up, but we'd say it's a better bet for 3's and up. A perfect take-along for overnights at Grandma's or longer trips.

2015 Award
Corolle Les Cheries Cecile a la Tour Eiffel
(Corolle $52 Score:)

This lovely 13-inch African American doll is dressed this season in a fashionable ensemble of a pink top with blue polka dots, cuffed jeans, and gold trimmed blue jacket with a tiny embroidered Eiffel tower. Her sassy pink beret, pink and red cap-toe ballet flats, and blue bag give Cecile a fashion forward look. She has big brown eyes, a friendly smile, and silky, long black hair for brushing and styling. Or consider Les Cheries Cecile Soiree Gala doll; featuring Cecile dressed for an evening outing in a bright pink, bow-accented dress under a purple cropped jacket with sparkling accessories. Either way, like all Corolle dolls she is lightly scented with vanilla. Marked 3 & up, but we think this is more like a 5 & up doll.

2015 Award
Mattel Barbie Eye Doctor Doll & Playset
(Mattel $19.99 Score:)

A play setting complete with eye chart, examining chair and patient comes with Eye Doctor Barbie (who also wears glasses!)  For kids getting their first pair of eye glasses, it's comforting to see Barbie also wearing hers. We like the idea of Barbie roleplaying as an Ophthalmologist, even if they didn't call her that. We could almost call this a step toward S.T.E.M. learning.  A good setting to role play with before kids visit their own eye doctor for a check up. Also available in African American version. 4 & up.

2015 Award
Project Mc2 Doll Mckeyla and Lava Lamp Experiment
(MGA Entertainment $24.99 Score:)

One of a new collection of Mc2 dolls that comes with a different science experiment for each doll--experiments that really work! Fashionably dressed in patterned knee highs and boots, jean shorts and jacket and a stylish black fedora and long glorious brunette hair. Mckeyla is a beauty who also likes reading detective stories and doing science. She comes with directions and parts for assembling a a working lava lamp that really bubbles. Her kit does not include the food coloring, veggie oil or effervescent tablet (as in Polident or Alka-selter) she needs. That said, the little lamp is very cool! Like the other dolls in this line she's more than just a pretty face. A playful way into STEM learning. 6 & up

Journey Girls
(Toys R Us $39.99 Score:)

This year's Journey Girl Dolls are off to London. These 18-inch play dolls spent last year in Paris and now they have moved on with a change in their clothes. They are still a great buy for the price and this year's costumes are spot on for riding in Hyde Park, shopping in Regent Street, sightseeing on the Thames, London Tower, Westminster and the British Museum. A multi-ethnic collection with tons of accessories and furnishings that you can add as other gift events arise. Check out Kyla, a brunette in a khaki trench coat and leggings; Kelsey, a red head in a tartan skirt; Chavonne in a denim vest and red pants; Callie with a Union Jack shirt and pink skirt; Dana in a blue and white two piece outfit; Meredith in a red trench coat and jeans. You can't go wrong with any of these playdolls for girls of 6 & up.

A new player in the FurReal Friends line, PomPom, a baby panda walks when you shake a rattle, slurps when fed with her special bottle and will wiggle, giggle and talk back. 2014 Award
Barbie Iron On Fashion Doll
(Mattel $19.99 Score:)

Does anyone iron any more? Yes, Barbie gets all her clothes styles with iron on decals. Talk about pretend, no fear of scorching anything with Barbie's special iron that needs no heat. This Barbie comes with wardrobe of clothes and 30 decals that get put on by rubbing the mini iron over them. There is a special dress form that is used to transfer and decorate the rather plain looking tops, skirts, and denim vest that come in the package. We did a test run with the little iron and decals, and our tester said to be forewarned—you really need to rub the decals all over and for a long time to get them to adhere to the clothing. Younger girls may need adult help to learn how to get all the decal off. That said, it is a neat play set with a fashion Barbie doll and a lotsof knit clothes to design and dress her in. 5 & up.
