Safari Fun Twist & Fold Activity Gym and Play Mat
(Infantino $45.99 Score:)

A portable play mat and activity gym with lots of colorful patterns to explore. It has four overhead toys for gazing, reaching out and batting at, too. You can remove the toys and add others for sparking interest. There is also a small mirror and a pillow for propping baby on for tummy time. It is approx. a 29-inch square and folds easily. Though there are gender specific mats around, we like this gender neutral one with primary colors.  If you are looking for an oversized mat for twins, check out Mamas and Papas Large Activity Floor Mat.

2012 Award
Skip Hop Treetop Friends Activity Gym
(Skip Hop $75 Score:)

A new activity floor mat for infants done in autumnal colors of green, orange and brown. The cross bars are covered in fabric and can hold any three of the five little fabric critters that come with the mat. There's a jingly owl, a bird that tweets, a mirrored apple, a rattle birdie, and a nutty squirrel for gazing or batting at. The arms have additional loops for hanging other toys. The mat itself has a nice tree top graphic and leaves appliqued that will not make the surface bumpy or lumpy to lie on. There's a pillow for tummy time that can be velcroed in place and a flat mirror that comes out when you want to launder the mat. All in all, a solid choice for basic gear. Newborns & up.

Gymini Move & Play Mat
(Tiny Love $74.99 Score:)

Newest in a line of well made play mats, and this one is better than most. Tiny Love was the company that introduced play mats with crossbars and tends to do them better. This big new mat is no exception. It has bold animal graphics that can be enjoyed for tummy time. The cross bars can actually slide on a mechanism that allow you to change their position with ease. The designers have not put a lot of "stuff" on the mat that would be unpleasant for baby to lie on. Soft animal toys and rattle rings attach to the bars and can be slid down to the corners or above for gazing. There is a good-sized unbreakable mirror that will slide down for tummy time looking. The musical attachment plays electronic sounds that are less annoying than most and there is also a not-too-bright-light mechanism that changes color when the sound is turned on. Happily there is a volume control and the mat can be enjoyed with the sounds and lights turned off completely, too.

Sassy Rock and Roll Developmental Gym
(Sassy $49.99 Score:)

This rock and roll theme translates into a pleasingly bright mat that is done in a variety of interesting fabrics and textures.  The archs are easy to put together and there are several adjustable and removable rattles that hang down for your baby to gaze at in the beginning.  Our favorite is the rattle that sounds like an old-fashion chime.  Eventually your baby will be able to bat at them.  It comes with a mirror that you can place at the bottom of one of the arcs--this is ideal for tummy time play. There is also a mirror that you can put above the baby. There is electronic music...not our all time favorite but you don't have to use it.  Our parents also liked that the mat was light and easy to carry. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements.   We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Oshimat
(Oshi Mat $50 Score:)

Yoga fans will relate to this baby mat immediately. It's made of a cushioned foam surface that is non-toxic  - 100%TPE  (no PVC, no Latex) and that rolls up in a bag for easy on-the-go activities.  Going to a mommy and me class? Just need a place to change the baby that doesn't feel creepy?   This mat is ideal for little ones and much like a yoga mat, very easy to take along. Comes in a variety of patterns - something that we really thought was a bonus.  The mat is not supersized--just right for younger infants. Once they start crawling--no mat will really keep them off the floor!  The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements.  We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Infantino Jumbo Patchwork Mat
(Step 2 $40 Score:)

A huge 47" square play mat provides plent of space for baby to roll, sit, and begin to crawl. It has 20 different play features with interesting sounds and textures to explore. Like the other mat from this company the Musical flower has a poor sound, but it can be removed and is difficult to activate, so it won't intrude too much or too often--or at all if you remove it. The patterns on the vibrant patchwork quilt adds visual interest, as does the safety mirror and lift up ears on the animal faces. Big enough for twins or more to share. Newborn and up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

SNAP: This oversized play mat has lots of interesting features for little ones to explore. For children with motor delays, this gives them a larger than most play space with a variety of sensory learning opportunities.

2010 Awards
Infantino Jumbo Wheel Play Space Mat
(Step 2 $30 Score:)

A giant size 47" diameter round play mat with plenty of room for baby to crawl and play. It has a detachable mirror, teethers, and eye catching polka-dotted fabrics and many interesting textures. There are big satin patches, and crinkle ears on big faces of a monkey, mouse, bear, and elephant. A colorful lion's mane has a velour feel and bright yellow face. Our one negative reaction is to the musical flower that plays with a touch. We found the sound to be less than pleasing. Good news is that the musical flower can be detached and is not all that easy to activate. This mat is big enough for twins to share. In fact our test family used it with triplets and liked it a lot. Designed for a large room. Newborn and up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

SNAP: We think the size of this mat is a real plus for babies who are delayed motor-wise. It is more spacious than your average mat so it is more spacious for a larger child as a play area. It also has interesting textures to explore.

Perfect for tummy time games and or lying back and watching the world, this big 30" X 32" mat has a bright red velour-like border that is lovely to the touch, as well as rings to finger. The bold contrast black and white squares have eye-catching graphics that are perfect for newborns and beyond. The images include a cat, a fish, a butterfly with crinkle wings among others. Three lift-up panels provide peek-a-boo surprises, one hides a mirror that lifts off and another has a big car that lifts to reveal a smaller auto, and the third has three-color petals that open to reveal an eye-catching black and white target. It's machine washable and an ideal, uncomplicated choice for babies from 3 months & up. Great shower gift!  The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. A silky surface on this nylon quilted mat with patterned patches that are eye catching. It has cross-bars with dangly toys and loops for adding more. A baby safe mirror attaches to one of the cross bars and there's a curved pillow to use for tummy time fun. There's a musical giraffe, plus a monkey, lion, and elephant. With a twist of the button on top the whole things folds and stores with ease. This is big enough for a baby who can turn over. It is not designed for babies who are standing or walking. 2003 Awards
Gymini Super Deluxe Electronic Lights & Music 3-D Activity Gym
(Tiny Love $65 Score:) All new graphics, lights, music, and a mirror have been added to this play mat. We were afraid the sound and lights would be over the top, but they are quiet and soothing with a choice of classical or nursery music. Like the original, this has two arches and dangly toys for gazing at and batting. Also new, Baby's Wind Chimes ($11 ), an add-on for baby to kick. Has a pleasing sound quality. SNAP: This is a good choice because the music and mirror add two more senses to the mix without making the mat overly busy.

Age: Infants. Award Year: 2003.
