2015 Award
Mattel Barbie Saddle 'N Ride Horse
(Mattel $44.99 Score:)

Talk about making things happen! This is a something new! Barbie not only is dressed for riding, she actually rides and no pretending, either. She can jump onto her horse and ride off into the sunset--if she doesn't fall over! This Barbie doll can be played with separately, but when she's ready for a ride, her hand attaches to the saddle and just a gentle push and she springs into action. Yes, this is a novelty toy and may run out of wow power before long, but she is special enough to be one of the memorable holiday gifts of the year and will fit into the playlife of Barbie pretenders. Marked 3 & up, we think it may be challenging to 3's and less frustrating to activate by older 4's and 5's.

2014 Award
Disney Walk n’ Talk Doc Mobile
(Disney $35 Score:)

Fans of Doc McStuffins are going to clamor for this novelty version that features Doc walking with her Mobil van. It's pretty much a watching toy. You put the handle of the van into the hole in Doc's fist, push the button and off she goes, pulling her van behind her. There's music and action and your player will need to provide the drama. We suspect this will be a wow for a brief shining moment. Doc is made of rigid plastic—she needs a strong core. On testing she did fall on her face a few times, but with luck she will walk upright and sing at the same time. Not a must have buy unless it is on top of the wish list and then, only maybe.

(blabla kids $56 Score:)

Who can resist the delectable bunny Mirabelle with her floppy pink ears with small pom-poms, her blue ballet leotard and her lace up slippers? Happily, all her clothes are knitted on and not removable. She's 18 inches tall with long legs and arms for easy grabbing. She’s big enough to satisfy toddlers love of big huggables, but light enough to be handled with ease. Her adorable stitched features will bring a smile from tots and adults alike.

(Hasbro $49.99 Score:)

A new player in the FurReal Friends line, PomPom, a baby panda walks when you shake a rattle, slurps when fed with her special bottle and will wiggle, giggle and talk back. Like all electronic dolls, she's not especially soft and cuddly, but she is interactive and if you own GoGo, My Walkin' Pup they can talk to each other--just sayin' Both are pure novelty items.

2014 Award
Barbie Career of the Year: Entrepreneur
(Mattel $12.99 Score:)

Dressed for success in her hot pink sheath and classic black pumps to go with her designer black handbag, Barbie is geared up with electronics and ready to answer any questions, no doubt. According to the stats on the back of the box, nearly 1-in-3 businesses in the United States are owned by women and by 2018 they say women will create over half the new small businesses in the US. So Barbie's message this year is work hard to succeed, dream, and make a difference. Available in various ethnicities and hair colors. We're giving you the link to Caucasian one...but there is a Latina, Asian, and African American.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2014. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Award
Mattel Barbie Fashion Vending Machine
(Mattel $23.99 Score:)

We are not huge Barbie furnishing fans, but this clever contraption could be fun for pretend play as well as a good storage device for all those little shoes, handbags, and necklaces Barbie dolls tend to generate. The working vending machine can hold all these items on the shelves that turn or put them on the right side, turn the crank and make the toys pop out.  Comes with some accessories with room for others. They say 3 & up. We say more like 5 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Cinderella Swirling Lights
(Mattel $29.99 Score:)

Push the blue gem on Cinderella's necklace and her dress lights up as fairy dust sounds tinkle. In her blue ball gown Cinderella is ready to go to the ball and her glass slippers are ready for dancing! Marked for 3 and up, but we think it will be enjoyed more by slightly older girls.

2012 Award
Pony Flag Race Lottie
(Arklu $19.99 Score:)

One of an adorable collection of 7-inch dolls with removable clothing and moveable joints for poseable play. They have painted faces with big eyes and plenty of hair to arrange. These are not fashion dolls in the traditional sense, but girl dolls. Their clothes have a high-end look, though the girls are plastic and not overly pricey. Marked 3 & up although kids under 5-6 will seldom have the dexterity to dress them. Also see Snow Queen doll and Spring Celebration Ballet doll from the same line.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
