2010 Award
Little Tikes Monster Dirt Diggers
(Little Tikes $29.99 Score:)

For the beach or sandbox, this big yellow plastic digger has an articulated cab, big wheels, and a spring action working 12" long crane that can scoop, lift, and release loads. The latter rotates a full 360 degrees. The truck bed tilts sideways to dump loads of sand or pebbles or whatever. There's a construction worker driver who can sit in the cab up front or in the seat that operates the claw. Itís bulky, but lightweight enough to take along to the beach or park. It can also be used indoors for dramatic play and loading up blocks or other heavy lifting. This makes a not too pricey but big looking birthday or holiday gift that will get miles of use. 3 & up.
The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Select'n'Go R/C Car
(Little Tikes $29.99 Score:) This snappy race car has a futuristic look with bright red knobby textured wheels. Controller is easy to operate with well-marked buttons. Our testers liked the monster truck look of the 2-in-1 R/C Truck (Fisher-Price $34.99), but report that Little Tikes Car corners better. 3 & up.

2002 Award
Racin'Rider RC Cycle
(Little Tikes $29.99 Score:) There are a lot of remote control cyclers scooting about this year. This one is easy enough for younger kids to operate. It has a very futuristic look. The cycler balances by putting a leg out when you change its direction with the two-button controller. Operating this calls for memory, directionality and some dexterity. too. For a simpler to operate vehicle, stay with last year's Select'n'Go R/C Car (Little Tikes $29.99)a zippy futuristic racing car.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2002.

Bendos My First RC Buggies
(Kid Galaxy $19.95 Score:) Our testers loved this new line of remotes designed with simplified remote controllers to operate. Choose a Bumble Bee or a spotted Ladybug with simple one button control. These have plenty of action; even when the remote is not pressed they spin. Still top rated, Old Tyme R/C Bumper Cars ($49.99 1⁄2) SNAP: Activity: Two kids can set up a racetrack and run their two bumper cars. (800) 816-1135.
