Ravensburger My First Puzzle At The Farm
(Ravensburger $9.99 Score:)

For beginners, here are nine two-piece puzzles featuring bold graphics of typical farm animals, as well as a tractor, and farming couple. With beginners you may want to introduce just one puzzle at a time rather than all the pieces in the box. This gives you a chance to talk about the animals, their names, and the sounds they say. The chunky two-piece puzzles are made of sturdy cardboard that fit together with relative ease and introduce children to the concept of part and whole. As you play with these simple puzzles toddlers are also building language with learning the names of familiar farm animals. This is one of a series of beginning puzzles. Marked 2 & up. Although some twos will be able to do these with help, this will be a better choice for slightly older children with more dexterity.

SNAP: Play an I Spy Game: Once children are familiar with all the puzzles and have played with them as suggested above, you can play another game with them. After the animals are together take turns making the animal sound of one of the animals and other player finds and names the animal you are spying. Reverse the game and have child make an animal sound for the creature he is spying. A good game for developing language and dexterity.

Unlike other puzzles in this series the knowing and naming part may take more time to master. Ravensburger My First Puzzle At the Construction Site
(Ravensburger $9.99 Score:)

For beginners, here are nine two-piece puzzles featuring bold graphics of big machines used at construction sites. Unlike some other puzzles in this series, the knowing and naming part may take more time to master. Learning the names of a dump truck, cement mixer, and other images makes this a better choice for older preschoolers. The chunky two-piece puzzles are made of sturdy cardboard that fit together with relative ease and introduce children to the concept of part and whole. As you play with these puzzles children are also building language with learning the names of familiar things.

After the vehicles are together say, I spy a truck that can dig or I spy a truck that is blue and can dump things out. Use these puzzles for reinforcing color concepts and actions. A good choice for developing language and dexterity.

Mudpuppy Puzzle Wheel, Construction
(Mudpuppy $9.99 Score:)

A two-sided seven-piece puzzle for beginners. It's all about matching colors and learning to fit the big sturdy pieces together. A central gear-shaped piece has opening with a bright color space to fit the pie shaped color pieces in. Flip it over and there are construction vehicles each on a single colored background. Again, the player matches colors while learning the names of these vehicles. This is part of a series of circular puzzles in the same format. There are also zoo, dinosaur, and farm versions that will interest your toddler and be useful for knowing and naming games that develop language as well as dexterity. Marked for 2's and up, you'll want to use this for parent and child time together. 2 & up.

2012 Award
Parents Perfect Peacock Puzzle
(Manhattan Toy $15 Score:)

An eight-piece wooden puzzle with big enough pieces for small hands. This is not as simple as it appears at first glance. Learning to rotate the peacock's feathers will take some practice and although they are similar in appearance they are not entirely interchangeable. Well crafted, the wood is smooth and the pieces sit above the puzzle board so that they are easier to take out and place back in the cut out. 2 & up.

2011 Award
Green Start Wooden Puzzles: Playful Pals
(Innovative Kids $9.99 Score:)

A cheerful looking puzzle with four small puzzles, each cut into four chunky pieced. There's a cute orange cat, a bunny, a dog and a yellow duck. Lift the pieces out and the background is color-coded and has a few of the details found on the puzzle pieces. But it is not one-on-one matching, so kids have to look a little closer. Also a good choice for developing dexterity and language and color concepts.  A nicely crafted wooden puzzle that will keep your preschooler challenged. They say 2 & up. We suspect older twos will do better with this. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2011 Award
Green Start Wooden Puzzles: Tough Trucks
(Innovative Kids $9.99 Score:)

There are six two-piece puzzles in this wooden puzzle board. Each has a bright graphic that is totally distinctive from the others. Lift out the pieces and the graphic (with a name label) is also in the tray for one-on-one matching. They make a Rainbow Fairy puzzle as well. The fairies are two-piece puzzles, but we prefer the real world vehicles for this age group. This is a fun toy for visual discrimination as well as developing dexterity and language. The storage case is well designed to preserve the integrity of the puzzle pieces. Made from wood from sustainable forests. 18 months & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.
