In true turtle fashion, Franklin has an unhurried pace that's right for young viewers. 4 & up.

(Disney $14.99 Score:) There are some real stories here that preschoolers will relate to. Spot's first day at preschool gives a reassuring glimpse of a typical day of playing with friends and paw painting. On the same tape is Spot at the Playground, which reinforces ideas of taking turns and safety without preaching. 2 & up. Also recommended: Where's Spot?, Spot Goes to a Party.

(Sony $12.95 Score:) In the newest of Sesame Street's Kids Guide to Life series, Maria takes Big Bird shopping. The bad news is that Big Bird gets lost; the good news is that Maria has taught Big Bird and viewers a catchy song for remembering their phone number as well as how to find help in the store. A non-threatening but valuable video with guest star Frances McDormand. 3-7

(National Park Service $15 Score:) This short film may not be your kid's favorite, but it just might save a life-especially if your family goes camping or hiking into the woods. Prepared by the Association of National Park Rangers this little realistic, no-nonsense film goes over the important things kids should know about how to stay safe if they get lost. a small brochure for adults comes with the video. 5 & up.

(Random House/Sony $12.95 Score:) Arthur can't see the chalk board or make a basket. His eyeglasses solve those problems, but it's Arthur who must come to terms with being called four eyes. Also on the same video, "Francine's Bad Hair Day," deals with class picture day and Francine's longing to look like her "glamorous" friend, Muffy, while still wanting to be herself. Like other earlier videos in this series, these stay true to the well loved Arthur books. Also solid: Arthur Writes a Story and Arthur's Pet Business.

Arthur Goes to the Doctor
(Sony, Sony $12.95 Score:) There are several health-related stories on this excellent video. In the first story Arthur cuts his knee and is afraid to tell his parents. It's D.W. who helps him do the right thing. In the second story D.W. gets poison ivy and the third story deals with Buster and his asthma. This informative film includes a live-action visit to a doctor about asthma. Still top rated: Arthur's Eyes ($12.95 ****), a video that may help kids who are getting used to needing glasses.
