1997 Awards
Dare to Dance
(Grey Dawn Productions $19.95 Score:)

This is not a how-to dance-along tape. It is an inspiring and beautifully crafted video with interviews and film of three young talented dancers from ten to seventeen that captures their feelings and love of dancing. 8-17

Also, I Want to be a Ballerina (Big Kids Productions $14.95) features a behind-the-scenes look at the casting, rehearsing, and highlights of the Nutcracker by student dancers.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years. Award Year: 1997. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2002 Award
Be a Hula Girl
(Kuleana Productions $14.95 Score:) We were testing a luau craft kit when this wonderful dancing video arrived from Hawaii. Our 8-year-old testers followed every motion and learned how to dance and move to the traditional music. We liked how the instructor kept reminding them to smile! You can buy the video alone, or with a raffia skirt and beads ($24.95). This would be fun to use for a luau party.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2002.

2004 Awards
How to Be a Ballerina
(Sony $9.98 Score:) Now on DVD, young ballerinas can join along with a children's class at the Royal Academy of Dance. From warm-ups, to rehearsing, to a charming performance of scenes from Sleeping Beauty, viewers are invited to dance along. A short version of Sleeping Beauty is told as film clips show adult ballerinas dancing, but it is the children's performance of the story that will inspire viewers. DVD also includes "How to Be a Ballet Dancer." 5-9.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2004.

2005 Award
I Want To Be a Hula Dancer & Wear a Flower Lei
(Kuleana Productions $21.99 Score:) An all-new video from the maker of the award winning Be a Hula Girl arrived too late for the book-but believe us- this is a keeper! There are several dances on this DVD that center on the lei, the traditional floral necklace worn in Hawaii . But thatís not all, this package comes with a silk flowered lei young dancers will love to wear plus instructions for making your own lei with fresh flowers (with adult supervision). Our testers loved learning the arm, hand, hip and foot movements as they did the hula with the girls on the screen and their charming teacher. Kids hardly need to be reminded to smile - this is an upbeat DVD that gets kids on their feet instead of simply watching. DVD is also available separately ($19.99). 5 & up. Also new for 2005 an adorable My Hawaiian Hula Girl ($ 19.99) A fabric doll with yarn hair, a "grass" skirt and Lei. She has painted toe nails, bendable arms and she's totally huggable.
