The Magic School Bus 25th Anniversary
(Scholastic $50 Score:)

Believe it or not-- it is the 25th Anniversary of The Magic School Bus show. We reviewed these shows when they arrived on the scene and many of the kids who saw the original shows are parents! Now they are available in a collection of eight DVDs. An entertaining way to introduce school aged kids to some basic science with playful turns. It includes among others...tours inside the human body, a trip to prehistoric times, an adventure in outer space. This award winning series includes an activity booklet and a guide for parents, too.  A new generation can fall in love with Miss Frizzle and her Magic School Bus! 5-9

2009 Award
Ocean Life, Book & DVD
(by Cynthia Stierie/ photos Annie Crawley, Reader's Digest Children's Books $17.99 Score:)

Handsome still photos are used to illustrate this big book with factoids that school aged kid will pour over. But it's the DVD with live footage of life under the water that sets this apart. Using an alphabet format this is a little less fluid than Annie Crawley's other DVD’s such as Who Lives in the Sea?, What Makes a Fish a Fish?, or Dive into Diversity. That said, lots of kids like to be able to hold a book in their hands and look at the pictures for as long as they wish, rather than the fleeting images on a video.

The Big Boom!
(Little Mammoth Media $14.95 Score:) Go inside an active volcano, follow a demolition team as it implodes a 22-story building, and watch supersonic jets flying faster than the speed of sound. Although some of the "factoids" about sound vibrations offered are a stretch for young viewers, kids with an appetite for science information will like this one. 6 & up. Still top-rated, The Big Space Shuttle, with splendid footage of the Shuttle, astronauts in training, and space camp. A wonderful way to explore the vast frontier of space. 5 & up. Platinum Award '99.

2004 Award
Playtime With Ahpun and Oreo
(Alaska Postcards Video $14.95 Score:) There's nothing cutsie about this film featuring two bear cubs who were orphaned in the wild and raised in the Alaska Zoo. In the wild, one would never be able to see a polar bear and brown bear playing together, but these two playful cubs grow into yearlings through the magic of video. In their new zoo pool, live salmon are added and the Ahpun (which means snow) does what a polar bear will do-so if this makes you uncomfortable, be forewarned. The pace is moderately slow, but the film footage is interesting and likely to keep kids entertained and informed. Also very fine, a DVD with "Playtime" plus "Animals of the Alaska Zoo," an interesting film about the Alaska Zoo, which keeps only disabled or orphaned animals that cannot live in the wild. 2-7. (800) 248-2624.

Age: Preschool,Early School Years. Award Year: 2004.
