2003 Award
Like Mike
(Twentieth Century Fox $22.98 Score:) Annie meets the NBA in this tale about a 14-year-old orphan named Calvin (played by rapper Bow Wow). Soon after putting on an old pair of sneakers that belonged to "MJ," Calvin finds himself playing in the NBA. Our reviewers loved the fantasy of it all, the cameo appearances of NBA stars, and the happily-ever-after ending. 6 & up.

2003 Award
The Saddle Club: Adventures at Pine Hollow
(Warner Bros. $14.95 Score:) Based on the popular book series, this is a live-action feature about several girls who love riding and horses. One of the girls is more mean-spirited than not and lazy about her chores, another is still mourning the loss of her mother, a veterinarian, and a third has very little confidence. Stir in a few good-looking young men who one girl has a crush on and a horse that foals, and you have all the makings for a preteen drama. We don't think kids will watch this more than once, but for the young horsey set it will be a winner. (85 mins.)

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2003.
