2014 Award
Is There a Dog in This Book?
(by Viviane Schwarz, Candlewick $16.99 Score:)

Viviane Schwarz takes the lift the flap book to a new and more sophisticated level. Unlike the usual toddler flap books this one has an amusing story line. Put simply, it's about three cats who think there is a dog in their house and they are afraid of dogs--but as the story moves along one of the cats thinks a dog might be nice to pet. In just a few amusing pages the tone of the story changes as the cats and dog begin to trust each other. It's hard to say how many times this lift the flap book will entertain, but let's just say, it is a lively and fun read the first time through. 3-7

2013 Award
Have You Seen My New Blue Socks?
(by Eve Bunting/ illus. Sergio Ruzzier, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

Duck cannot find his new blue socks. So begins this journey in verse with Duck asking fox and ox and finally the peacocks if they, by chance, have seen his socks. This will be a fun read-aloud and a good one for breaking the code for beginning readers. It's a one-joke book that is pretty predictable, but probably satisfying enough to hear more than once. 4-7

2011 Award
George Flies South
(by Simon James, Candlewick $16.99 Score:)

There is just the right amount of page turning suspense in this sweet story of a little bird that does not want to leave his nest and thinks he cannot fly. Winter is coming and it is time to fly south. Then nature takes a hand and lifts the nest out of the tree and off to an adventure that is at once exciting and reassuring, since Mama bird manages to follow her baby and urge him on. It is no so much about separation as it is about the scariness of trying new things and the joy of succeeding. It speaks volumes.

Sally's Great Balloon Adventure
(by Stephen Huneck, Abrams Books $16.95 Score:)

Following the delicious scent of fried chicken Sally, a curious Labrador retriever finds her way into the gondola of a hot air balloon. By accident, she pulls the ropes and takes off on a flying adventure. There's just enough suspense and daring-do to keep the attention of preschoolers. The art work, done with bold wood block prints is handsome. 3 & up.

2010 Award
Martha Syas it with Flowers
(based on books by Susan Meddaugh, Houghton Mifflin $12.99 Score:)

Martha the talking dog has long been one of our favorite characters. Now Martha is becoming a star on TV and the books that are coming with this new celebrity are based on the teleplays, which are based on the characters. While this first book is not bad, it certainly does not have the verve and cleverness of the original storybooks. We suggest you borrow or buy the original Martha Speaks and the other books that followed that are by Susan Meddaugh.
