2015 Award
Project Mc2 Doll Mckeyla and Lava Lamp Experiment
(MGA Entertainment $24.99 Score:)

One of a new collection of Mc2 dolls that comes with a different science experiment for each doll--experiments that really work! Fashionably dressed in patterned knee highs and boots, jean shorts and jacket and a stylish black fedora and long glorious brunette hair. Mckeyla is a beauty who also likes reading detective stories and doing science. She comes with directions and parts for assembling a a working lava lamp that really bubbles. Her kit does not include the food coloring, veggie oil or effervescent tablet (as in Polident or Alka-selter) she needs. That said, the little lamp is very cool! Like the other dolls in this line she's more than just a pretty face. A playful way into STEM learning. 6 & up

Journey Girls
(Toys R Us $39.99 Score:)

This year's Journey Girl Dolls are off to London. These 18-inch play dolls spent last year in Paris and now they have moved on with a change in their clothes. They are still a great buy for the price and this year's costumes are spot on for riding in Hyde Park, shopping in Regent Street, sightseeing on the Thames, London Tower, Westminster and the British Museum. A multi-ethnic collection with tons of accessories and furnishings that you can add as other gift events arise. Check out Kyla, a brunette in a khaki trench coat and leggings; Kelsey, a red head in a tartan skirt; Chavonne in a denim vest and red pants; Callie with a Union Jack shirt and pink skirt; Dana in a blue and white two piece outfit; Meredith in a red trench coat and jeans. You can't go wrong with any of these playdolls for girls of 6 & up.

(Hasbro $49.99 Score:)

A new player in the FurReal Friends line, PomPom, a baby panda walks when you shake a rattle, slurps when fed with her special bottle and will wiggle, giggle and talk back. Like all electronic dolls, she's not especially soft and cuddly, but she is interactive and if you own GoGo, My Walkin' Pup they can talk to each other--just sayin' Both are pure novelty items.

2014 Award
Barbie Iron On Fashion Doll
(Mattel $19.99 Score:)

Does anyone iron any more? Yes, Barbie gets all her clothes styles with iron on decals. Talk about pretend, no fear of scorching anything with Barbie's special iron that needs no heat. This Barbie comes with wardrobe of clothes and 30 decals that get put on by rubbing the mini iron over them. There is a special dress form that is used to transfer and decorate the rather plain looking tops, skirts, and denim vest that come in the package. We did a test run with the little iron and decals, and our tester said to be forewarned—you really need to rub the decals all over and for a long time to get them to adhere to the clothing. Younger girls may need adult help to learn how to get all the decal off. That said, it is a neat play set with a fashion Barbie doll and a lotsof knit clothes to design and dress her in. 5 & up.

Barbie Career of the Year: Entrepreneur
(Mattel $12.99 Score:)

Dressed for success in her hot pink sheath and classic black pumps to go with her designer black handbag, Barbie is geared up with electronics and ready to answer any questions, no doubt. According to the stats on the back of the box, nearly 1-in-3 businesses in the United States are owned by women and by 2018 they say women will create over half the new small businesses in the US. So Barbie's message this year is work hard to succeed, dream, and make a difference. Available in various ethnicities and hair colors. We're giving you the link to Caucasian one...but there is a Latina, Asian, and African American.

2013 Award
Prettie Girls Valencia
(One World Doll Project $22 Score:)

A new collection of fashion dolls has just stepped onto the runway. Inspired by her childhood love of Barbie and a career that started with designing dolls of color for Mattel, Stacey McBride-Irby has just introduced Valencia, a Latina from Mexico City and Lena, a Business Girl from North Carolina. Like women of color, the Prettie Girls dolls come in varying skin tones and hair. Valencia, the Athletic Girl is 11.5 inches tall and big on working out and other sports. She comes dressed for warm weather and an active life style. They say 3 & up, we'd say this is going to be better for 5's and up who have the dexterity to deal with the fine details.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2012 Award
Matilda, Your Tudor Girl for All Time
(A Girl for All Time $135 Score:)

A lovely 16" Tudor girl comes dressed in a long gown of grey velvet with a plum colored underskirt, known as a kirtle. She wears historically styled undies and a petticoat and wears typical Court shoes, a key necklace and a grey headdress. A book about the 13-year old Matilda and her life in the court of Henry VIII makes for good reading. Stunning wardrobe choices are also available. We loved the silk lined velvet cloak ($29.99) and her masked ball gown($29.99). Like other Girl for All Time dolls she is fully articulated at the knees, and elbows for more playability. Though she is designed for play, she is totally collectible and likely to be treasured by anyone lucky enough to receive her as a gift. They say 5 & up. We'd say more like 8 & up.

Age: Early School Years, Later School Years, Tweens. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2013 Award
Mattel Barbie Fashion Vending Machine
(Mattel $23.99 Score:)

We are not huge Barbie furnishing fans, but this clever contraption could be fun for pretend play as well as a good storage device for all those little shoes, handbags, and necklaces Barbie dolls tend to generate. The working vending machine can hold all these items on the shelves that turn or put them on the right side, turn the crank and make the toys pop out.  Comes with some accessories with room for others. They say 3 & up. We say more like 5 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Cinderella Swirling Lights
(Mattel $29.99 Score:)

Push the blue gem on Cinderella's necklace and her dress lights up as fairy dust sounds tinkle. In her blue ball gown Cinderella is ready to go to the ball and her glass slippers are ready for dancing! Marked for 3 and up, but we think it will be enjoyed more by slightly older girls.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
