2012 Award
Monster Treds
(Ertl $19.99 Score:)

Well known for their models of farm equipment, this year’s big combine is 9 inches X 7 inches and has taken on a slightly jazzier look and sound. Done in the Ertl classic green with yellow trim, the new look includes super bouncy rubbery tires, and a shaking action with engine start up sounds and more. A smaller Monster Tred Tractor comes with big tires, plus lights and sounds. Both a fun choice for pretend play. 3 & up.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2012.

Jake and the Never Land Pirates Who Shook Captain Hook? Game
(Wonder Forge $19.99 Score:)

Fans of everything pirates and specifically the Disney show Jake and the Never Land Pirates will enjoy this treasure grabbing game. The board sets up with Captain Hook taking a nap on his hammock -- he's surrounded by all of his treasures.  On each turn you will be instructed (by where you land) on which tool you will use to remove the treasure from the hammock.  Use the little plastic sword, fishing pole, tweezers (the easiest) or the shovel to grab your treasure. BUT be careful--if Captain Hook falls off the hammock, you lose the round. Fun and fast rounds.

Huggalo Collection
(Huggalo $19.95 Score:)

Huggalos are soft huggable dolls with a dedicated place on their chest for placing a photo of someone special. There's Doodle Dude (made of canvas and intended to be written on), Camo Joe (done in green fleece camaflouge), Huggsley (our favorite - he comes with a cape and is clearly the super hero of the line), and Camo Flo (same idea as Camo Joe but done in pink).  We think this collection will have an audience with not only the preschool set--but tweens/teens.  The line has a sense of humor and whimsy to it that will likely have wide appeal.

SNAP: Having a photo of a family member can be a comfort take-along when going out into the world. This one is less young looking than most and a little more amusing.

Age: Toddlers, Preschool, Early School Years, Later School Years, Tweens. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Award
Janod Kubix Geometrix Blocks
(Janod $24.99 Score:)

A pleasing set of 50 wooden geometric cubes in an array of colors.  We love the open-endedness of this set-- exploring how the differently shaped cubes can fit together.  Fun to work on with your child - a great opportunity to talk about colors and shapes.  The blocks are also ideal for working on visual discriminaton skills. The only issue we had with the product was the recommended age. While an 18 month old could fill and dump with these pieces, the set is better suited for older preschoolers given the fine motor skills needed to turn the pieces - not to mention the problem solving skills required to fit the pieces together.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2012. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2012 Awards
Fisher Price Kid Tough Apptivity Case
(Fisher-Price $15 Score:)

If you are handing your iphone or ipod touch to your child you may want to seriously consider the Fisher Price case that protects the screen against drips and sticky hands. It has a sturdy shell that should cushion a fall, but the company does not make that claim. There is a hole for the camera and you can download free learning apps. This is available in blue or pink. We are not recommending that preschool apps are a great learning tool or that time spent playing with the small screen is time well spent. We have serious concerns and recognize that small children learn best by interacting with people and real things. But, recognizing that this is one of many ways children try on the world, we are simply suggesting this as a way of protecting your equipment.

2012 Award
Ceaco Pinkalicious Floor Puzzle
(Ceaco Kids $13.99 Score:)

A giant 24-piece floor puzzle that is two sided! So, you get two puzzles for the price of one. This one features the popular storybook chracter Pinkalicious. On one side she is having a picnic and on the reverse she has made cupcakes. Unlike adult puzzlers, kids like to do their puzzles many times in order to gain mastery over the challenge. You’ll need to introduce the concept that there are two sides and perhaps sit with your child to help turn the puzzle pieces right side up to start. Giving beginners strategies for putting together the outside frame is also helpful to build their confidence as well as their competence. Marked for 3 & up. This may make better sense for your 4 & up.
