2013 Award
Puppies and Kittens 2
(by Marilyn Easton, Scholastic $5.99 Score:)

A seemingly magical book that shows kittens when flipped from the top and puppies if flipped from the bottom. The information is straightforward without overwhelming the reader and the photos show the great variety of adorable creatures we know as puppies and kittens. An appealing choice for sharing with prereaders and for young readers who love pets and/or non-fiction. 2-3rd grade.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2013 Award
Cinderelephant
(Emma Dodd, Scholastic $16.99 Score:)

Recast with a seriously strange cast, this retelling of Cinderella is visually fun and full of not too subtle word play. Cinderelephant's ugly cousins are two warthogs, known as the Warty Sisters and her fairy godmother is a small mouse who provides a stretch limo and requisite ballroom fashions. It's apparent from the start that Prince Trunky, son of King Saggy and Queen Wrinkly, will find his mate when Cinderelephant appears. There are few surprises here. That said, it is amusing to share and compare with the original. Do a bit of comparative lit and maybe spin another Cindy Tale with a different cast and even a different adventure. 4 & up.

2013 Award
I'm a Frog!
(by Mo Willems, Hyperion $8.99 Score:)

Piggie has discovered the thrill of pretending, but his good friend, Gerald simply does not understand. Once again, Mo Willems has managed with few words and lots of action to give young readers a story they can read with pleasure and relative independence. Level 1

2013 Award
Captain Cat
(by Inga Moore, Candlewick $15.99 Score:)

Captain Cat loves cats. He foolishly trades valuable objects when he sees another cat. As a trader he is something of a failure until he visits an island where they are having a problem that he and his cats can solve. Inga Moore's folktale style art matches her amusing story (unless of course, you are squeamish about a few pages that feature the demise of many rats.) There's a good yarn here that will make for entertaining reading.

Nina's Book of Little Things
(Keith Haring, Candlewick $19.99 Score:)

Created for Nina Clemente for her 7th birthday, this is a welcome reissue of a book designed by the late artist, Keith Haring. Designed as more of an activity book that kids can draw, paste, tape or 'hammer' into, Haring invites children to collect and draw little things. Destined to become a time capsule of your child's view that will be a unique treasure.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2013 Award
Bugs: A Stunning Pop-up Look at Insects, Spiders, and Other Creepy-Crawlies
(by George McGavin/ illus Jim Kay, Candlewick $19.99 Score:)

Although this is a pop-up, the reading level and fine print are definitely way beyond beginners. The paper crafting is detailed and sure to please. Entomologist, George McGavin gives budding scientists a guided tour of a wasp's nest, where bugs live, a cockroach's body, and more. 7 & up

2013 Award
Have You Seen My New Blue Socks?
(Eve Bunting/ illus. Sergio Ruzzier, Houghton Mifflin $16.99 Score:)

Duck cannot find his new blue socks. So begins this journey in verse with Duck asking fox and oxand finally the peacocks if they by chance have seen his socks. A fun read-aloud and a good one for breaking the code for beginning readers. It’s a one-joke book that is pretty predictable, but probably satisfying enough to hear more than once.

2013 Awards
Henny Penny
(retold and illustrated by Paul Galdone, Houghton Mifflin $8.99 Score:)

A reissued treasure, this classic story retold and illustrated by one of the great picture book artists of the 20th century. Now in a new collection of Folk Tale Classics from Houghton Mifflin. Good fun to read aloud with all the rhyming names repeated again and again as Henny Penny and Cocky Locky and Ducky Lucky run off to spread the news that the sky is falling! Sounds a little like the news on TV, too. Spoiler Alert: In case you forgot—Foxy Loxy is the last of the cast. 4 & up.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2013.

2013 Award
Crankee Doodle
(by Tom Angleberger/ illus. by Cece Bell, Clarion $16.99 Score:)

A laugh-out-loud parody of a classic song. In an imagined conversation Yankee Doodle's Pony is trying to get him to go to town to buy a hat. But Crankee Doodle is not in the mood. A fun read-aloud or an even funnier shared read-aloud. Go on and ham it up! Of course, if they don't know the song, Yankee Doodle, the whole joke will be lost. 6 & up.

2013 Award
Stick
(by Andy Pritchett, Candlewick $15.99 Score:)

An almost wordless book about a puppy who is looking for a playmate. None of the animals in the pasture want to play "Stick" until another puppy comes along and the others get the idea and make off with the stick. But, never mind, the two puppy dogs have something better--each other. A good choice for encouraging children to tell their own stories in their own words.
