2011 Award
Groovy Girls Chef Charlotte
(Manhattan Toy $20 Score:)

With rolling pin in hand and her jaunty chef hat and pink chef's coat, Chef Charlotte is ready to cook up some Groovy Doll fun. Like all the Groovy Girls her soft body is light, her features are stitched on, her clothes are removable, her yarn hair is slightly wild, and her cute fabric skirt and purple shoes have cupcakes on them. 3 & up.

2011 Award
Blabla Mini Fluer, Mini Pierre, and Mini Balthazar
(Blabla kids $35 Score:)

New huggables from Blabla are more muted than the original dolls. Pierre is dressed in putty with an olive green bag and burnt orange scarf. Balthazar is wearing a cutaway and bow tie and has a mustachio. He seems to have an award on his lapel--perhaps for being such a dashing hare. Mini Fleur is done up in a mauve pink with some licks of lavender. We think these will appeal more to older collectors.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2011.

2014 Awards
Corolle Miss Corolle Classic 14" Coquette Dolls
(Corolle $74 Score:)

Scrumptous is the word that comes to mind when you see any one of the dolls in this multi-cultural collection that first won a Platinum Award in 2011.  Each 14" tall  with a full head of hair (there is a brunette, blond, red head and African American in the collection).  What we love about these dolls is that they look like girls and are dressed appropriately (but extremely fashionable as you would expect from a French dollmaker!).  Each doll sports an outfit you'll want! New for 2014, Mademoisell Corolle VAnilla Coco Doll (African-American in a pink and white dress), Mademoiselle Corolle Coquette Redhead Doll (red hair against a lovely school girl white collar, blue top and purple skirt), Mademomoiselle Corolle  Coquette Brunette Doll (comes in a very trendy faux-fur vest, grey sweater, pink shorts and grey tights). All would make very special birthday presents for the preschooler set.

Age: Preschool, Early School Years. Award Year: 2014. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.

2011 Award
Manhattan Toy Groovy Girl Irish Steppin' Adelaene
(Manhattan Toy $20 Score:)

In her pink slippers and green knee highs, Adelaene is ready to reel and celebrate the wearing of the green, no doubt. She has red yarn hair and a fussy dress with purple puffed sleeves that is otherwise all green. Like all Groovy Girls she has stitched features. 3 & up

In her pink slippers and green knee highs, Adelaene is ready to reel and celebrate the wearing of the green, no doubt. Manhattan Toy Koala Bear
(Manhattan Toy $30 Score:)

A 16" armful of Koala with realist big ears and a big snubbed black nose. Done in grey plush with a white furry chest and fluffy cream and white ears. This has a realistic look and a flat bottom so it can sit up instead of flopping over. It's paws are picked out with gray pads and black claws (soft felt so not worry here) This is a cute huggable for 3 & up.

2010 Award
Ugly Dolls 2010
(Ugly Dolls $20 Score:)

It will be hard to choose just one of the terrific new Ugly Dolls this season. Consider, Ninja Batty Shogu, a black fleece fellow with big blue eyes, red nose and three yellow teeth. Or consider Wippy, a pink rabbit-like creature with tall ears and grey eyes and two yellow teeth. There is also coral colored Mynus who has a singular bump on her head and a goofy smile. Her tag says she's the one you should turn to when you are in trouble. Also, a good choice, Pointy Max, a green fellow with a very pointy head and one all-seeing eye smack dab in the middle of his face. Oh, there are others, such as Pink Flatwoodsey with a tall pointy head and Ket a bluish looking dog-like doll and MIJ who seems to be asking a question and Picksey who claims to be able to inhabit several spaces at the same time. Honestly, you'll have to make up your own mind. Dolls in series often run out of steam, but this year's Ugly Dolls are really even better than in the past. All ages. If you buy them online you will have to search out the one you love best.

2010 Awards
Sing-a-ma-jigs
(Fisher-Price $12.99 Score:)

Our testers agree - these are the cutest novelty toys of the season. Pictured is just one of several Sing-a-ma-jigs. Each has it's own colorful personality and tee-shirt. To activate their sounds and moving lips, you must press their bellies. But first, press the left hand and the doll greets you with words. Press again and it will sing a familiar song. Press once again and the doll sings in harmony alone or with as many other Sing-a-ma-jigs as you may happen to own. Each doll has it's own unique song. Red sings "Where, Oh Where, Has My Little Dog Gone?" and he sings as fast or slow as you push his belly. Blue sings, "When the Saints Go Marching In." Yellow, in an argyle tee shirt sings, "Home on the Range" and Pink in polka dots sings "Skip to My Lou." These are going to be hot, hot, hot! The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

SNAP: For kids who need to strengthen hands, this is a playful motivator. It's also a good way to learn about cause and effect since the song sings fast or slow, depending on how you squeeze it.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2010. Click here to purchase the product on Amazon.com.
