Poupette

These would have been Platinum winners, but they're marked 18 mos. & up, and the small hair accessories make them more appropriate for 3 & up. Also new, tubbable bath dolls; select either Les Bébés Bains ($40 each ) (Caucasian or Asian version available) or long-haired 14" La Poupee Bain ($65 each ). 3 & up. Still top rated, Les Minis Calins Blue Chip ($16 & up ), sweet 8" soft-bodied dolls which also come in Asian and African American versions.

2004 Award
Dogs of the Year 2
(Gund $24 Score:) Best of Show: Gibson (Gund $24.99 1?2) a two-tone, incredibly soft floppy 14" pup that will fill up your arms! Then there’s Gus (Gund $24 ), a caramel pup with a darker patch of fur on one eye. (732) 248-1500. And then there’s what we’re told is the hottest dog of the season, a pink French poodle named Penelope (Mary Meyer $15 ) for those who can’t get enough pink! Flip Flops (Mary Meyer $15 ) are the ultimate in relaxed plush! These animals flop over and are made of extremely soft fabric. Our favorites: the new Pugsley Pug, Libby Yellow Lab, and Lucky Black Lab. (800) 451-4387.

Love Me Chou Chou
(Zapf Creation $49.99 Score:) Love Me Chou Chou score 3 (Zapf Creation $49.99) Love Me Chou Chou babbles, cries, says mama, and moves her feet, but she was disappointing to our testers who thought she was "too heavy... she had a seam on her head—looked like she had brain surgery... and you had to put a pacifier in to make her stop crying." We still highly recommend this company’s multi-ethnic and silent Baby Cakes Birthday line. Each 19" doll comes with eyes that open and close and are dressed in a beautiful knitted seater and cap. A scrumptious armful. Also pleasing, My First Baby Annabell ($19.99), a sweet and very affordable 14" bald baby doll in a terry cloth romper.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: .

2005 Award
Little Mommy Potty Training Baby
(Fisher-Price $25 Score:) One of the most innovative dolls we’ve tested! She drinks but does not tinkle until she’s on her special potty seat. It’s magic (really creative use of magnets that releases the water)! Unfortunately, she is not tub-able! For an all-vinyl tub-able body, consider Corolle’s anatomically correct girl or boy 14" doll. They're pricier ($40) but very attractive. In the novelty doll category, Potty Elmo PLATINUM AWARD (Fisher-Price $19) is amazing. Give Elmo his sippy cup and you’ll hear him drink; if you don’t get him to the potty, he says, "Oops, Elmo didn’t get to the potty. Accidents happen," and if he makes it, "Elmo can do it and so can you!" One of the best and most polite interactive dolls we’ve ever tested. We pass on Zapf Creations’ Baby Born ($39.99 ) who got low marks from our testers because they had difficulty getting the pretend poop out (no joke).

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2005.
