2006 Award
Twenty-One Elephants and Still Standing
(by April Jones Prince/illus. by Francois Roca, Houghton Mifflin $16 Score:) We had a similar story based on true events last year. In that version the child storyteller is at the center of the story and longs to go on the newly built Brooklyn Bridge. In this one, itís P.T. Barnum who comes up with the solution. Either way, itís a great story and speaks to the fears people have of most new things. 7 & up.

Age: Early School Years,Later School Years. Award Year: 2006.

2007 Award
Weedflower
(by Cynthia Kadohata, Simon & Schuster $16.95 Score:) While Sumiko experiences discrimination in her home town before the war, the attack on Pearl Harbor changes her life forever. Her family is sent to an internment camp where she befriends a Native American. A compelling view of this dark period in American history (for a non-fiction account, see Dear Miss Breed, review below).
