Sing-a-ma-jigs
(Fisher-Price $12.99 Score:)

Our testers agree - these are the cutest novelty toys of the season. Pictured is just one of several Sing-a-ma-jigs. Each has it's own colorful personality and tee-shirt. To activate their sounds and moving lips, you must press their bellies. But first, press the left hand and the doll greets you with words. Press again and it will sing a familiar song. Press once again and the doll sings in harmony alone or with as many other Sing-a-ma-jigs as you may happen to own. Each doll has it's own unique song. Red sings "Where, Oh Where, Has My Little Dog Gone?" and he sings as fast or slow as you push his belly. Blue sings, "When the Saints Go Marching In." Yellow, in an argyle tee shirt sings, "Home on the Range" and Pink in polka dots sings "Skip to My Lou." These are going to be hot, hot, hot! The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

SNAP: For kids who need to strengthen hands, this is a playful motivator. It's also a good way to learn about cause and effect since the song sings fast or slow, depending on how you squeeze it.

2010 Award
Dance Star Mickey
(Fisher-Price $70 Score:)

First things first...Dance Star Mickey is a pure novelty.  That is usually not a plus. But if you love Mickey, you are going to love this toy. He's anything but plain and simple. He's not one of those soft and cuddly dolls kids snuggle up with at nap time. He's covered in plush, but you can feel the armature of his articulated body inside. That said, he is one adorable mouse! A musical Mickey who will get kids up on their feet to dance along to five different tunes from Latin to Soul and get them to play whatever game your favorite 'Leader of the Band' has in mind. Mickey's face comes alive as he talks, walks and waves his arms in the air. His whole body moves as he turns and does the moonwalk to his own music. He plays a freeze dance game that calls for some serious listening. So, unlike a lot of electronic dolls, Mickey is not just about watching. He's all about moving and doing. He runs the show, but he's more like a party director than a bossy toy. This is one kind of mouse you won't mind having in your house, even if he is a novelty.  The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

2010 Award
Manhattan Wildlife Collection Willis Walrus
(Manhattan Toy $30 Score:)

Willis has a wistful look with his deep set eyes and drooping tusks. A marvelous 14" plush walrus of dark brown velvety plush with wrinkly skin folds and dark blue-grey snout and flippers. We love his whiskers and all the detailing that make Willis a walrus worthy of hugs. He does look a lot like the Warren Walrus Puppet from the same company. However, Willis does not open his mouth and he seems to be dreaming of something. 3 & up.

2009 Award
Snowflake Bear
(Mary Meyer $45 Score:)

A 22” snowy white bear has a silver snowflake embroidered on one paw and another on it’s white scarf. This armful of a cuddly bear has a brown snout and dark eyes. A smaller 12” version, Snowball, is a look-alike huggable that is almost half the size, but very lovable. 3 & up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Preschool. Award Year: 2009.
