Step Two Easy Turn Coupe
(Step 2 $59.99 Score:)

Our testers spent several happy afternoons driving around in this new kiddie car that runs on foot power. It has a front castor wheel for added maneuver-ability. With a working horn and ignition key there are miles of pretend fun with the Easy Turn Coupe. As an added bonus, it can be used with younger riders that an adult can push along, however, there is no safety belt. There's a removable floorboard to protect little feet when they are being pushed. Also nice, this has a front trunk storage area and cup holders for both child and adult. 1 & up.

Play-Doh Plus
(Hasbro $8.99 Score:)

Play-doh has been updated to make it softer and smoother than ever. It has an almost silky feel and will stay that way if stored in air-tight containers. This set has eight different vibrant colors that can also be used with special tools that are sold separately. The package indicates that it is non-toxic, but does contain wheat. 2 & up.

SNAP : A classic model material that is even more pliable now. Excellent for developing hand and fingers. Also good for shaping snakes to form letters, giving children a sensory feel of forming letters.

(Hape $63 Score:)

With its orange fabric basket and bright blue and sturdy wooden sides, this is a gender free push-about prop for pretend play. It will get miles of play for pretend shopping trips and also serve as a stroller for teddy bears and dolls that need a nap. Low and stable this cart has treads on its wheels so t will not fly away. It is pricey, but will go the distance and still have reserve so it can be passed along to younger sibs or cousins. 3 & up.

2013 Award
Peaceable Kingdom Stack Up!
(Peaceable Kingdom $29.99 Score:)

Designed for preschoolers, this really is a cooperative game that can only be played by working together to lift the blocks in a stack. The players are trying to beat the Stack Smasher ( a cardboard playing piece shaped like a hand) as it moves around the board. In one game there are challenge cards that require kids to bark or sing or do other actions on their turn. Again, they do this together. There are three games for preschoolers to play with two lifting rods. In one game they use the skinny end of the rod; in the other game they use a sponged tip to lift the blocks and add to the stack. The maker has also included directions for a two-year old color sorting game that little siblings can play. So many games for preschoolers are hard for beginners deal with, especially the winning and losing part. Here the game is played against the board instead of each other as they learn about taking turns and working together to beat the silly old stack smasher. It can also be fun for multi-generational family fun that can include preschoolers with ease. 3-5

Manhattan Toy Finger Paint Fun
(Manhattan Toy $20 Score:)

Designed for little hands, this fingerpaint kit comes in a cute tin carrying case loaded with four colors of washable finger paint, three plastic scrapers with different edges and three stampers. Ideal for exploring textures, colors, and open-ended hands-on painting. You will need to provide the paper, apron or smock and drop cloth to protect the work surfaces. 3 & up.

SNAP: Chubby handles on the painting tools are easier to grasp and ready for exploring.  Some children are reluctant to put their hands directly into the paint, while others will see no reason to use the tools. Either way, with tools or hands-on painting offers opportunities for them to see how paints blend to form new colors as well as giving concrete meaning to words like wavy, straight, jagged, wiggly, etc. It also encourages whole hand, arm and finger motions that provide a sense of control and sensory feedback. Messy? Sure. But play and learning go hand in hand with some messiness. Cover up their clothes and the work surface and be prepared for serious clean-up. Keep it playful.

Just right for twos, this new six piece chef set is ready for some pretend cooking fun!  Comes with a pan, a pot and lid, a slotted spoon, mixing spoon and bright orange colander. 2013 Award
Corolle Mon Premier Calin Charming Pastel
(Corolle $39.99 Score:)

For older toddlers, Corolle's 12-inch Calin dolls have long been our favorites. We love that this is a multi-cultural collection and that there is always a boy doll in the mix.  They are hand washable and have soft vinyl heads, legs and arms. Their  beautifully finished rompers also add to the appeal. Their bald heads are a safe choice for toddlers who are still mouthing toys. Their bean-bag bodies allow them to sit in many poses and their sleeping eyes open and close. Best of all they are light and cuddly for early pretend play.

This delicious new version is in a soft pink romper with matching hat (with a knotted finish). There is also Calin Sky (a boy version in a blue romper). Check out other Platinum Award winning Calin dolls for multi-ethnic choices including Corolle Mon Premier Bebe Calin Naima Doll, Corolle Mon Premier Calin Yang Baby Doll.

2013 Award
Corolle Miss Corolle Classic 14" Coquette Dolls
(Corolle $79.99 Score:)

Scrumptous is the word that comes to mind when you see any one of the dolls in the collection that first won a Platinum Award in 2011.  Each 14" tall  with a full head of hair (there is a brunette, blond and red head in the collection).  What we love about these dolls is that they look like girls and are dressed appropriately (but extremely fashionable as you would expect from a French dollmaker!).  Each doll sports an outfit you'll want!

2013 Award
Nursery Carriage
(Corolle $109 Score:)

An update of our 2010 Platinum Award Winner. The carriage, originally in red and pink, is now done in navy with accents of pink, white and navy.  Seriously stately and gorgeous. It not only collapses for travel, the soft fabric body of the carriage - the doll's bed - lifts out of the frame to become a carrier with straps for ease of toting about. This has white treaded wheels with pink hubcaps and a lift-up hood for giving dolly a sun-shaded nap. Marked 3 & up.
