Super Spiral Play Tower
(International Playthings $32 Score:) Toddlers love this marvelous toy that they quickly take charge of. Two weighted balls and a little penguin twist down the spiral and slide into different slots. A green froggy slides down a chute and makes a funny sound that ends with a ping of a bell. Repetitive action provides the kind of predictable cause-and-effect results toddlers love. Develops eye-hand skills as well as visual tracking. 18 mos. & up. Their original PLATINUM AWARD-winning Tomy Ball Party Roll Around Tower and Ball Party Bounce remain top rated (they are very similar to the Edushape toys reviewed above). (800) 445-8347.

Lamaze Balancing Bug Stacker
(Learning Curve International $14.95 Score:) Five chunky bugs and a snail can be stacked one on top of another or explored one at a time. Our 8 month old tester thought they were best for teething and tossing. Each has eyes, colorful patterns and chewable wings, legs, or feelers. With magnets safely enclosed in the body of each, these are safe for mouthing and fun for little hands to explore. Add a box or bowl and they will be fun for filling and spilling. Marked 6 months & up, but will be enjoyed most when your baby is able to grasp and release--usually comes a little further down the road. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Tomy Roll Around Tower
(International Playthings $24.99 Score:) When people ask us for our favorite two year old birthday present, this ball run is high on the list. It's just right for toddlers who love the repetitive action of making something happen. The plastic colorful balls are oversized and fun to drop into the tower. The balls make a pleasing sound as they move down the tower. Unlike many new ball runs, kids can track the balls from beginnning to end- a plus in this category. Also fun and a little more advanced, Ball Party Bounce (here you can position the ball to bounce off one level and into another chute).

Age: Toddlers. Award Year: 2000.

Lamaze Pond Stackers
(Learning Curve International $14.99 Score:)

Six colorful magnetic stackers in the shapes of pond critters. Their magnets are totally inside the play pieces for safe keeping and they “adjust” so that when north and north meet one magically turns inside, so that the play pieces connect. These critters fit into small hands and have chewy wings and tails for teething. Good for developing color concept language. 6 months & up.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. SNAP ACTIVITY: Designed with the magnets inside for safe keeping, these little pond critters fit into a hand easily and allow children to develop their grasping and letting go skills. Best of all the magnets help the critters connect. How high can you stack these magnetic critters. As you use these with your child, reinforce color concepts by referring to the blue bird, the orange fish, the green frog.

Munchkin Caterpillar Spillers
(Munchkin $6.95 Score:)

A well designed set of seven cups that are perfect for little hands to explore. Each is brightly colored and comes with a variety of openings for pouring fun in the bathtub. This is the perfect kind of take along toy in the diaper bag for a sitting up baby/toddler. Our one year old tester sat quietly while she enjoyed being about to pick up each cup by the easy to grasp handles. The caterpillar's green face has big eyes and the smallest cup has an fun spinner to activate. You can stack them up and let your baby enjoy knocking them down. A good example of a great toy that doesn't have any bells and whistle or an expensive price tag.

The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab. SNAP ACTIVITIES: Stacking and nesting are the least of what kids can do with these colorful cups that each have different cut outs that allow them to be used in the sand or tub…for watching water or sand slip through. These are also fun for children to knock down after they are stacked up tall. Use color words to refer to the cup the child is picking up and refer to them by size…that one is the smallest…or this one is the biggest.

2009 Award
Lamaze Stack, Roll and Crawl Ball
(Learning Curve International $20 Score:) A stack of rings fit onto a straight post, so there is no size order for fitting them on. However, to put the ball together, they will need to be in order. That said, this is a toy that can be enjoyed long before babies can put it together or take it apart. It’s a colorful ball with beads rolling around the top, that you can spin or roll back and forth with baby. Taking it apart will come before they can fit it back together…in order or otherwise. So, this is a versatile plaything that won’t roll too far away from beginning players, can encourage social behaviors, crawling and eventually eye hand coordination. 6 months & up. The company has signed a verification form complying with our safety requirements. We did not independently test this toy in a lab.

Age: Infants,Toddlers. Award Year: 2009.
