2003 Award
( by Karen Hesse, Scholastic $16.95 Score: ) When you think of the Ku Klux Klan, you probably think about southern communities. But the bigotry of the Klan knew no borders. Set in 1924, in a small town of Vermont, Witness is told in the voices of the many people who are caught in the web of hatred that threatens their livelihood and well being. A novel that could be read as story theatre, Hess has crafted a cast of memorable witnesses , adults, as well as a twelve-year-old African American girl and a six-year-old Jewish child. Their many stories, told in distinctive voices, reflect how individuals in a community deal with their anger, fear; courage, and innocence in the face of those blinded by racist strife. 9-12.
