2012 Award
eeBoo Holiday Chain Set
(eeBoo $10.00 Score: )

We have mixed emotions over this set of 24 foot long pieces of two sided print paper. The pieces had links at the end so no glue is needed, though we think it takes more dexterity to fasten them than most young kids will have. We suspect you will end up giving them glue to make them stick. That said, they are highly decorative and thicker than most chains we made as kids.

Age: Early School Years. Award Year: 2012.

2012 Award
American Girl Fun Fabric Bag
(American Girl $25 Score: )

Our 9-year old tester loved adding the precut felt flowers to the green fabric shoulder bag. This involves learning how to sew on a button as well as the flower and making choices about where to place the colorful flowers. It comes with plenty of embroidery floss, needle, flowers, and a project booklet. Best of all the finished bag is totally wearable. 8 & up.

2012 Award
Creativity for Kids Stunt Squadron
(Creativity for Kids $18 Score: )

Finding craft projects for boys can be challenging. This kit comes with five foam planes that fly well both indoors and out. Before they start flying however, kids can decorate them with the metallic foil stickers and color-in stickers that can be customized with the 8 fine tipped mini-markers included. Each little plane is almost 7 x 7 inches big. Kids are likely to need help getting the stickers off the sheets, especially if they have no fingernails to get them started. That said, this is a fun kit for a play date or encouraging boys to use fine motor skills. 5 & up.

2012 Award
Tots Art Start
(Alex $16 Score: )

A collection of art supplies, chosen for young preschoolers. No glue or scissors are needed. There are no lines to color inside of, nor designs to copy. There are two colorful frames with a sticky background on which children can put pieces of flat, shredded, or fringed tissue paper, patterned stickers, and doilies. All of these are supplied in the package. There are four other non-sticky frames, two with white backgrounds, one shaped like a tree; another shaped like a horse. This is an open-ended kit that also includes three triangular shaped crayons. The latter are faint unless used on one of the points of the triangle. All the materials are ready for experimenting with making collages. Marked 18 months and up. We'd say that may be rushing it a bit for most toddlers. Once you start using this you may want to start a collage box of your own for further exploration.

2012 Award
Creativity for Kids Fashion Bracelets
(Creativity for Kids $19.99 Score: ) Enough bracelets for two arms full - or for sharing on a fun play date. Ideal for a small sleep-over activity. This new kit includes 5 chunky plastic bangles and 10 thin metal bangles along with a wonderful assortment of adhesive tape, ribbons, craft glue, bows, rainbow cord, embroidery floss, scissors, and ideas brochure. Testers especially like the sparkly rhinestone trim that come in ribbon-like strips for adding bling to the bangles. Marked for 7 & up, however, we think 7's may need help with the final touches to secure their decorations.

2012 Award
Style Me Up Romantic Scarf
(Style Me Up $23.99 Score: )

A loom for making something special you can really wear...naturally this craft kit made a huge hit with our tween tester. What you get is a knitting loom with 2 rows of 12 pegs. Itís not hard and the instructions are clear and easy to follow. You just wind the yarn in a zig-zag fashion going back and forth. The end product is great and even better when you buy a heavier yarn and make another one or more. 10 & up, up, up.
