LEGO City Space Deep Space Rocket and Launch Control 60228

(Lego $99.99)

A NASA inspired model that will thrill experienced builders. It’s a multi-stage rocket that stands 16” tall and ready for lift off. A small track brings the astronauts from mission control center to the rocket launcher. We had the fun of watching our excited tester and his mom build some parts of this amazingly well-designed kit. We were amazed with the patience he used to fit the tiny, tiny pieces together and his budding understanding of the parts of the spaceship and how the solar panels work. Lego breaks it down into doable tasks instead of dumping 800+ pieces out. Each bag builds a discreet part of the build and comes with its own pictorial directions. In a way, it's teaching kids about how to organize a big task, by breaking it into smaller tasks. The kit includes 6 LEGO City mini-figures: 2 astronauts, 2 scientists, Launch Director, ground crew technician and a robot figure, plus a space telescope, rover with articulated arm and a launchpad. Our tester was eager to show us how , with an app on his mom’s phone, you could hear Mission control do the count down for launch and as the astronauts enter outer space he could watch their fuel supply. A challenging build with great play potential. Marked for boys and girls 7 and up. We think younger builders will need a patient adult partner, and both will likely benefit from the shared experience.
